Berhampur university to give gold medals to toppers

Berhampur (Odisha), Jan 17: Twelve years after halting the practice, Berhampur University in Odisha plans to award gold medals to toppers of 21 postgraduate departments, the best graduate student in Arts, Science and Commerce streams. Spiralling gold prices had prompted the University to discontinue the practice of awarding gold medals to meritorious students since 2002. "We will make the system viable by reducing the quantity of gold in medals from six grams to four grams," said vice-chancellor Deepak Kumar Behera. Students were handed only certificates after the system was discontinued.
The proposal will be placed for approval before the syndicate, the highest decision-making body of the university, on Saturday. After approval, we will try to introduce the system by the next convocation. A gold medal recognises a student's merit," the VC added. The university has decided to write to contributors for an increase in donation to make the gold medals possible. These were sponsored by individual donors and organizations in memory of their dear ones and the contributions ranged from Rs 10,000 to Rs 2 lakh. The Dept. of Industrial Relations and Personnel Management is organizing Professor Gopal Chandra Rath Memorial Lecture in honour of Prof. Gopal Chandra Rath, former Professor & Head, Post-Graduate Dept. of Industrial Relations and Personnel Management, Berhampur University. Having graduated from Cornell University of the United States of America, Prof. Rath started his career as a personnel executive in Kalinga Tubes, Choudwar, Odisha. Subsequently, when Berhampur University opened the Department of Labour and Social Welfare in 1967 (later renamed as Industrial Relations and Personnel Management), he took the stewardship of running the course as the Head of the Department.
Both as a professional and as an academician, his sole objective was to groom the students as per the requirements of the industrial organizations and government agencies. Prof. Rath retired from the university services in May 1992 and was staying at his native place at Cuttack. Until his death he was actively involved in academics with the academic activities of the Department of Industrial Relations and Personnel Management. He expired on 9 February 2013.

These villages are Laxmipur and Dharampur (Ganjam), B Sitapur and Kharidhepa (Gajapati), Banamaliput and Old Sunabeda (Koraput), Antarigada (Rayagada), Paburia (Kandhamal), Dandiaguda (Malkangiri) and Jatiguda (Nabarangapur).
The tribal-dominated places will be developed into model villages in association with National Institute of Rural Development (NIRD), Hyderabad.
A high-level meeting was held in the university to discuss different aspects of the proposed model villages. Director general of NIRD M V Rao, vice-chancellor Deepak Kumar Behera, bankers and programme officers of National Service Scheme (NSS) attended it.
"NSS volunteers will be identified in the villages in collaboration with the local administration. Awareness in these villages will be created on issues such as sanitation, health, plantation, literacy and water conservation, said the vice-chancellor.
"We will work like facilitators. We will talk to the district administration and bankers to fill the gaps in development. We will also provide skill development training to local youths to develop rural enterprises," said Rao. The NIRD would extend assistance for next three years, he added.
He said NIRD has been working in 50 villages of Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh and Odisha for the last one and half years .
